What to Ask Before Choosing South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring

August 15, 2016 By admin Leave a Comment

South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring – if you’re considering a hardwood floor to spruce up your residence or business, here are some of the thing to consider.  First, what type of hardwood floor should you get installed?  You will also need to determine what color and style of hardwood floor is best for you and for your purposes and goals.  You will need to think about achieving the best look with the furniture, moldings, and colors you already have or will have in the area.   Finally, you will need to be sure you are choosing the best South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring company to get the job done right.

South Plainfield Hardwood FlooringSouth Plainfield Hardwood Flooring – Type

Consider the basic options.

The first thing to consider if your hardwood flooring plan is what type of hardwood flooring you will be going with.  Solid wood is what is typically considered when you think about a hardwood floor.  Though traditional, these thick, solid planks of wood are not the only option available today.  You can also use engineered wood.  This option is made of a layer of veneer fused to the top of plywood.  Engineered wood and better withstand moisture, so if you have a cement under floor, you should go with the just as beautiful engineered wood option over solid wood.

Floor location:  below, on, or above grade?

Determining which floor level you will be installing the flooring will help you decide if you should go with the engineered or solid wood variety.  If you are hoping for a beautiful home with South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring on the second floor, your options are pretty wide open.  If you are thinking of putting hardwood flooring below grade (in the basement) or on grade (at ground level), engineered wood is a more recommended bet because it deals well with moisture concerns.

Subfloor Material

Is the floor under your hardwood cement, concrete, plywood, or particleboard?  The material of the grounding under your hardwood flooring, called the subfloor, will influence the type of hardwood flooring you will have most success with.  For example, a concrete floor limits you to the engineered wood for the same reason we have been mentioning: moisture.  If you are hoping to install solid hardwood anyway, plywood can be installed first, but that is going to cost you.  If you have particleboard (often installed under carpets in the 1970s), you will still need to install plywood before putting down solid hardwood.

South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring – Style

Lifestyle and UseSouth Plainfield Hardwood Flooring

Before diving into color options and grains, it’s important to consider how much traffic is going to be going about on your new South Plainfield hardwood flooring.  Do you have children who are going to be dropping toys, running through with mud on their sneakers, or drawing with crayon on the floor?  Do you have pets with scratchy nails?  Considering the hardness of flooring that you choose and the durability will help be sure you are happy with your product for years to come.  Also keep in mind that different stains, grains, and finishes are expert at hiding dents and scratches, should they be inevitable in your household.

Maintenance and Cleaning

How easy is your new hardwood floor going to be to clean?  Will it take a lot of maintenance to keep it looking shiny and new?  If you aren’t interested in consistently refinishing the wood in your home, you may consider the higher price of an oil finish.  The oil soaks into the wood, meaning you have to re-stain less often.  If the wood is rough or has a lot of tiny scratches and grooves in it, it may hold dust and dirt easier.  Consider your cleaning and maintaining schedule and comfort of your home so your beautiful hardwood flooring doesn’t become more of a burden than your current housework.

Wood Type

Door casings, cabinets, and trim work should all be considered when selecting the type of wood you want your South Plainfield Hardwood Flooring to be.  Natural maple is a great choice if you find yourself drawn to more modern styles.  Hickory is great for mixing light and dark pieces and will give you a more traditional hardwood feel.  If you have a lot of light in the space you are flooring, darker woods may lend themselves very beautifully to your space.  Try to see a sample room of the type you are considering before you take the plunge.  Just because you love one type of wood in general doesn’t mean you will like the look of it all over your dining room floor.

Stain and FinishSouth Plainfield Hardwood Flooring

When considering the stain of the wood, you are looking at what color you want the floor to be.  The finish will protect the floor and can give it either a flat matte or a glossy look.  In general, a high gloss or semi-gloss finish will be harder to maintain, needing to be refinished more often.  Scratches and wear and tear will be more visible on this type of finish, so it might not be the best match for you if you have an active family or lifestyle.

Tips On Choosing Hardwood Flooring

March 7, 2016 By admin Leave a Comment

Hardwood flooring looks great and lasts for years to come. Sometimes, trying to pick out the right hardwood flooring for you can be an overwhelming process. Here are some basic tips to help you make a choice:

Choosing Hardwood Flooring

Raritan Hardwood Flooring | Somerset County Flooring Company

  1. Solid or Engineered – First, you are going to want to find out whether or not you want engineered or solid hardwood flooring in your home. Both options have their pros and cons. You have to ask yourself where the hardwood will be placed. Certain areas such as basements have only one option to select from: engineered. You want to make sure this is considered first.
  2. Species – There are differences in the species of wood such as grain patterns, hardness, durability, color, and style. Oak, maple, and hickory are popular choices that all contain many features homeowners enjoy. Compare sample boards side by side so you can analyze the details they offer.
  3. Color – Next, you’ll want to decide what type of colors you think will match your home décor the best. This is usually a subjective matter but many homeowners love lighter, neutral colors because they have a tendency to blend well with almost anything.
  4. Width of Boards – Are you going for the illusion of more space? Then you’ll want to consider hardwood flooring options that feature wider board widths.
  5. Warranty – Hardwood floors are essentially an investment into your home. As a consumer, you want to know your investment is protected.  Make sure the hardwood flooring you are interested in comes with a great warranty to keep you covered for several years.
  6. Reputation of Manufacturer – How long has the manufacturer been in business? Are they new to the industry? Do they offer a lot of variety? Do they have excellent, trustworthy reviews? Are there any awards they have won for various areas of performance? These are the things you should be considering before making a decision.

Choosing Hardwood Flooring

June 15, 2015 By admin Leave a Comment

Because of the huge variety of woods, colors, and finishes available today, shopping for a hardwood flooring can be pretty difficult. Here are five things to know and consider when looking to purchase hardwood flooring:

Central NJ Hardwood Flooring

Hillsborough Hardwood Flooring | Central NJ Flooring Company

  • Type of Wood Flooring –  There two main types of hardwood flooring products: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Solid wood flooring is milled from solid wood logs, and is joined with a traditional tongue and groove along both the long and short edges. Solid wood is available prefinished or unfinished. Engineered wood flooring is comprised of multiple layers of plywood and composite material, and topped with a layer of solid hardwood.  While both types offer the same beauty of real hardwood, the primary difference between solid hardwood and engineered flooring is in the floor’s composition. Engineered flooring, which is more stable due to its multi-ply construction, can be installed on all levels of the home.
  • Choice of Wood Species – There are many different woods used in flooring, but some are harder making them more durable than others. While Red and White Oak are the most common domestic wood floors, Hickory, Maple, and Walnut are also popular choices. Top selling exotic woods such as Brazilian Cherry, Brazilian Koa and Cumaru are among the hardest species available.
  • Grain, Color, and Appearance – Because hardwood flooring comes in so many different species, styles and finishes, it is fairly easy to select a floor to match any room décor. If you have a country-style interior, wide plank floors with highly defined wood grains and a distressed appearance will be a good fit. For Colonial homes, consider wide, random plank width flooring in Oak and Maple. Virtually any type of wood can be used in a contemporary setting, depending on what stain or finish is used.
  • Type of Finish – The finish is the real determining factor in the overall appearance of a wood floor. The same wood species will look completely different finished in a clear gloss, versus a distressed, hand-scraped or wire-brush finish. Distressed, hand-scraped or wire-brush finishes will also be something to consider when shopping for a wood floor. Hardwood flooring is sold either “unfinished” or “pre-finished.” Unfinished floors are sanded and finished on-site, which provides for a consistent seal and prevents dirt and moisture from penetrating the seams between boards. Pre-finished flooring is factory-applied in a controlled setting, and typically receives seven to eight coats of sealant.
  • Cost and Installation – The cost of hardwood wood flooring depends on the type, the wood species and the finish. Typically, solid prefinished wood flooring runs from $2.49 to $12.69 per square foot. Prices on engineered prefinished wood flooring range from $1.69 to $8.79. The average cost of installation usually runs about half as much as the flooring but depends on the type of flooring and installation for your home.
