sweep or dry-dust daily, damp-mop with a barely-wet microfibre mop and a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner every one to two weeks, and never let water sit on the surface. Steam mops, vinegar, ammonia, bleach and wax polishes all damage the finish and on engineered hardwood, the finish is the part doing the protecting.
Engineered hardwood is a thin layer of real wood over a stable plywood or HDF core. That real-wood veneer is typically 2mm to 6mm thick, and the factory finish on top of it is measured in microns. Clean it the way you would clean tile and you will not scratch through to the core you will dull and eventually strip the finish, which is far harder to put right. This guide covers the routine that keeps that finish intact.
The Cleaning Routine, Step by Step
Daily: dry cleaning only
- Sweep with a soft-bristle broom, or dust-mop with a dry microfibre pad.
- If vacuuming, switch the beater bar or rotating brush off and use a hard-floor attachment. A spinning brush head is one of the most common causes of fine surface scratching.
- Pay attention to entryways and the first two metres inside any exterior door. Grit tracked in from outside is abrasive, and it does its damage underfoot before anyone notices it is there.
Every one to two weeks: damp mop
- Sweep or vacuum first. Mopping over grit grinds it into the finish.
- Spray a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner directly onto a microfibre mop head, or lightly onto a small section of floor never flood the floor.
- Mop with the grain in sections of about one square metre.
- The floor should look dry within a minute. If it stays wet longer than that, there is too much liquid on it.
Twice a year: reset
- Move furniture and clean the areas underneath, which collect dust that eventually gets ground in.
- Check and replace felt pads on chair and table legs hardened, dirt-embedded pads act like sandpaper.
- Inspect high-traffic paths for finish dulling. Catching wear early is the difference between a screen-and-recoat and a full refinish.

Spills, Stains and Pet Accidents
Speed matters far more than technique. Almost all permanent damage on engineered hardwood comes from liquid that sat, not liquid that was spilled.
- Water, juice, coffee, wine: blot immediately with a dry cloth, then wipe with a barely-damp cloth and dry the area. Do not let it air-dry.
- Sticky residue (syrup, sauce, adhesive): lay a warm damp cloth over it for thirty seconds to soften, then wipe. Never scrape with anything metal.
- Grease: a pH-neutral cleaner on a cloth, worked gently. Degreasers are too aggressive for a wood finish.
- Pet accidents: blot immediately and clean with an enzymatic cleaner rated safe for sealed hardwood. Urine that reaches the wood beneath the finish causes dark staining that cleaning cannot remove at that point it is a refinishing question, not a cleaning one.
- Scuff marks from shoes: a clean tennis ball or a felt pad rubbed over the mark lifts most black scuffs without any chemical at all.
Humidity: The Factor Most Cleaning Guides Ignore
Engineered hardwood is far more dimensionally stable than solid wood, which is exactly why it suits homes with basements and slab construction. It is not, however, immune to seasonal humidity swings and in the Northeast those swings are substantial, from humid summers to dry heated winters.
Keep indoor relative humidity between roughly 35 and 55 per cent year-round. In winter, forced-air heating can drop indoor humidity well below that, and boards will shrink slightly, opening thin gaps at the seams. In humid summer months the reverse happens and boards expand. Neither is a defect, and both largely resolve as conditions change but keeping humidity in range reduces the movement, and it protects the finish as much as it protects the wood.
A cheap hygrometer tells you more about the long-term health of a wood floor than any cleaning product will. If you are choosing flooring for a basement or a room with persistent moisture, luxury vinyl plank is often the more honest recommendation than any wood product.
Protecting High-Traffic Areas
Cleaning removes dirt. Preventing dirt from arriving does more for a floor’s lifespan than any product on the shelf.
- Put a coarse mat outside each exterior door and a washable mat inside. Most abrasive grit is stopped in the first few steps.
- Use felt pads under every furniture leg and check them twice a year.
- Use a rug in pivot zones in front of the sink, at the base of stairs, under desk chairs where the same few square feet take the wear of the whole room.
- Avoid rubber-backed or vinyl-backed mats directly on hardwood. They trap moisture and can discolour the finish beneath them.
- Keep pet nails trimmed. Nail scratches are the most common damage we see on engineered floors in family homes.
When Cleaning Is No Longer Enough
There is a point past which no cleaner helps. If the finish looks permanently hazy in traffic paths, if there are scratches you can catch a fingernail in, or if water has left dark marks that will not lift, the floor needs refinishing rather than cleaning.
Whether that is possible depends on the thickness of the wear layer. Engineered boards with a veneer of 3mm or more can usually be sanded and refinished at least once; thinner veneers often cannot be sanded at all, though a screen-and-recoat abrading the existing finish and applying a fresh coat without sanding into the wood can restore a great deal without removing material. Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use a Swiffer on engineered hardwood floors?
The dry sweeping pads are fine and are a good daily option. Be more careful with the wet variety check that the solution is pH-neutral and specifically labelled safe for sealed hardwood, and make sure the pad leaves the floor damp rather than wet. A microfibre mop with a dedicated hardwood cleaner gives you more control over how much liquid reaches the floor.
Is it okay to use a steam mop on engineered wood?
No. Steam drives heat and moisture through the finish into the wood layer and the adhesive below it, which can cause cupping, delamination and clouding of the finish. Most manufacturers explicitly void the warranty for steam cleaning, so it is worth checking your paperwork before anyone in the household reaches for one.
Can I use vinegar to clean hardwood floors?
No. Vinegar is acidic and gradually etches modern urethane finishes, leaving a dull surface that cannot be polished back. The vinegar advice widely repeated online originated with old wax-finished floors and does not apply to today’s factory finishes.
