Certifications That Actually Mean Something

The Materials, Honestly Compared

Cork

Harvested from the bark of the cork oak without felling the tree, which regrows its bark over roughly nine years. Warm and soft underfoot, naturally sound-absorbing, and comfortable to stand on for long periods — a real advantage in a kitchen. It dents under heavy furniture and point loads, fades in direct sunlight, and needs resealing periodically. Best in kitchens, playrooms and home offices where comfort matters more than hardness.

Bamboo

A grass, not a wood, and it reaches harvest maturity in about three to five years against decades for hardwood. Strand-woven bamboo in particular is extremely hard. The caveats are worth knowing: quality varies enormously between manufacturers, and cheaper products can use adhesives with higher formaldehyde content — so CARB Phase 2 compliance genuinely matters here. It also handles moisture no better than hardwood.

Linoleum (not vinyl)

Genuine linoleum is made from linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, pine resin and jute. It is biodegradable, naturally antimicrobial, and one of the few flooring materials that is not a petroleum product. Marmoleum is the best-known brand. Do not confuse it with vinyl, which is often loosely called linoleum and is a completely different, plastic-based product. Linoleum needs sealing and does not tolerate standing water at seams.

Reclaimed hardwood

Salvaged from barns, factories and older buildings. The environmental case is straightforward — no new tree is cut — and the material is often denser old-growth timber with character no new product can imitate. It is the most expensive option here, supply is inconsistent, and it needs careful inspection for nails, moisture content and insect damage before installation.

FSC-certified engineered hardwood

Uses far less hardwood than solid timber by putting a thin veneer of real wood over a plywood core, and is dimensionally stable enough for kitchens, basements and slab construction. Look for both FSC certification on the wood and CARB Phase 2 on the core. Recycled-content tile

Porcelain, ceramic and glass tile made with post-consumer recycled content. Extremely durable, completely waterproof, and effectively inert once installed — no emissions at all. Kitchens combine everything that tests a floor: standing water, dropped pans, grease, dragged chairs, and long periods standing in one spot. That narrows the eco options meaningfully.

  • Best all-round: recycled-content tile. Waterproof, effectively permanent, no emissions. The trade-off is that it is hard and cold underfoot, which a rug in the prep zone solves.
  • Best for comfort: cork. Standing on cork for an hour of cooking is noticeably easier than standing on tile, and it absorbs the sound of a busy kitchen.
  • Best traditional choice: linoleum. It has been used in kitchens for over a century for good reason, and modern sheet and tile formats are far better looking than the material’s reputation suggests.

Indoor Air Quality: The Part Most Guides Skip

A certified low-emission floor installed with high-VOC adhesive is not a low-emission floor. The installation materials matter as much as the product, and they are almost never mentioned in a quote.

What to specify:

  • Adhesives: water-based, low-VOC, ideally FloorScore or GREENGUARD certified in their own right. Solvent-based adhesives off-gas for weeks.
  • Underlayment: cork or recycled felt rather than foam where the product allows it.
